The Traditional Approach: Atomized Water and Its Limitations

For years, the standard method for humidifying plates has been the use of atomized water. Water, in the form of tiny droplets, is introduced into the environment, providing the necessary humidity for the oxidation reactions.

However, this approach, while functional, has inherent limitations:

• Inhomogeneous Distribution: Water droplets, due to their mass and surface tension, tend to settle or fail to penetrate uniformly into every nook and cranny of the plates. This can lead to inhomogeneous curing, with some areas being over-cured and others under-cured, affecting the overall quality of the plate.

• Longer Cycle Times: To compensate for poorer penetration and ensure sufficient humidity, curing cycles can require more time.

• Energy Consumption: Atomizing and heating large volumes of water can be energy-intensive.

• Tetra-PbO, formed at lower, controlled temperatures, has a distinct “snowflake” shape where each Pb2+ ion sits above a $PbO\_4$ pyramid with identical $Pb-O$ distances. This unique molecular structure results in significantly higher acid absorption—a vital property for high-performance batteries. The difference in conductivity and acid absorption between ortho-PbO and tetra-PbO can drastically impact the efficiency and lifespan of your final products.

Beyond AGM, the lead carbon battery will be the storage solution

In the previous article we talked about how AGM batteries are the real future for energy storage and safety battery for electric cars.

AGMs have now been a consolidated global reality for over 10 years.
But in addition to this battery, there is another type that could be the real future of the coming decades.
It’s called: LCB (LEAD-CARBON BATTERY)

How a Lead-Carbon Battery works

Before talking about LCB, we need to review how a LAB (Lead acid battery) works:
A LAB is composed of a negative Pb electrode and a positive PbO 2 electrode.
The exhaust products of both Pb and PbO2 are PbSO4.
The cycle time and charge acceptance of a LAB under a PSoC are predominantly limited by the sulfation of the negative Pb electrode

The lead-carbon battery is a modification of the classic lead-acid battery.
The parallel connection of Pb with AC (activated carbon) is transformed into an internal parallel connection, the LAB is transformed into an advanced LAB with a carbon – enhanced bifunctional lead-carbon composite negative electrode.
These lead-carbon electrodes have increased power and cycle life during PSoC operation.
Sulfation of LAB can be addressed by the addition of functional carbon materials, which can increase the conductivity of the negative plates and the steric hindrance effect that separates the growth of PbSO 4 particles, providing an extra active surface for growth of the energy branches of Pb

The increased charge acceptance of a lead-carbon electrode was also achieved by adding other nonporous carbonaceous materials [carbon black (CB), carbon nanotubes (CNTs), graphene, and carbon nanofibers].

DISADVANTAGES

The lead-carbon composite electrode is more complicated than expected, although its components are very simple.

ADVANTAGES OF LCBs

In energy storage, the advantages of lead-carbon batteries are exceptional thanks to strong charge acceptance, safety and reliability, and low production costs.

In addition to energy storage, lead-carbon batteries are also used in electric and hybrid cars.
Because they can quickly produce and absorb charge during vehicle acceleration and braking, lead-carbon batteries are particularly suitable for automobile start-stop systems. Compared to other technologies, lead-carbon batteries have clear advantages in terms of cost and safety.
The cost of a lead-carbon battery is approximately €130/kWh.
Once the battery is disposed of, the lead inside it can be easily recycled and reused.
The residual value of the failed battery is very high and is one of the economically feasible avenues for energy storage technology. At the same time, because the lead-carbon battery electrolyte is an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid, as long as ventilation is maintained, combustion and explosion will not occur, so it is safe.
As the technology continues to mature in the future, lead-carbon batteries will occupy an increasing market share in the field of energy storage.

The fact remains that we need to produce homogeneous positive and negative plates capable of making the battery last.

Regarding the positive plate (PbO2) you must have a 100% tetragonal oxide, there are no other ways.
And you need to take care of the plates well.

Why AGM batteries are the future

In March 2023, the energy storage system for factories was inaugurated in Huzhou, China.
This system is one of the largest in the world.

But let’s take a step back.
What is an AGM battery?
AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries are a class of lead-acid batteries in which the electrolyte is absorbed into a matrix of thin glass fibres.

The advantages of AGM batteries are numerous.

1. Compact

They are compact, very resistant to mechanical stress (so resistant that they can be used for military purposes) and can be mounted in any position.

They can be used at high altitudes or at sea, and can cope better with high temperatures.
If the container breaks, the acid leakage is limited.
Thanks to the division of the plates by glass fibers, there is no danger of short circuit from cell to cell.

2. High Cranckin Power 

They are suitable for starting motors thanks to their very high inrush currents, they have a low self-discharge and a high amperometric yield during charging.

They also have a lower internal resistance than regular lead-acid batteries and maintain a more constant voltage, and charge faster;

Spiral plate batteries have an even shorter charging time.

3. No maintenance

They do not require maintenance.

Huzhou’s Case Study

Connected to Huzhou main power grid since March 2023.
The installation helps reduce energy costs for industries and citizens by providing an alternative energy source to peak tariffs.

The main advantage of this innovative system is the cost, compared to other energy storage systems:

In this event, every year there is an award ceremony for technical innovations in the lead-acid battery industry:
The BCI Innovation Award in honor of Sally Breidegam Miksiewicz recognizes innovations within the battery industry that align with the guidelines of sustainability, safety, cost, performance, uniqueness and value.

We presented ourselves with the FASMELT: the rapid melting furnace that has many advantages:
– fast melting time
– without CO2 emissions
– reduced waste
– 60% less consumption compared to a traditional oven

The award was won by ENTEK International

But I was surprised by the many people who flocked to our booth after the FASMELT video was broadcast.

I didn’t expect that many managers would be impressed by the new system of melting lead, in a way that is safe for operators, without emissions, and energy saving.

Today the lead battery industry has many challenges to face, but the first is:

• workers’ lead intoxication

• emissions

• production costs

Before talking about the benefits of producing lead-acid batteries with a FASMELT, it is good to remember what the limitations are today regarding the production of lead-acid batteries:

Workers’ lead intoxication:

“The new rules include a revised binding workplace occupational exposure limit for lead in air of 0.03mg/m3 and a biological limit value for lead in blood of 15µg /100ml.
There is new guidance to protect female workers of childbearing age.”

These are the new laws in Europe, but in the US not much changes.

Many companies are implementing new internal rules to reduce lead levels in the blood:
– ban on smoking cigarettes
– closed helmets
– limited access in certain areas

The fact is that the problem remains, in all these actions there is none that eliminates the emission of lead into the air.

Emissions problem

“From October, the CO2 levy‘s trial phase will require companies importing steel, cement, aluminium, electricity, fertilisers and hydrogen into the EU to report the emissions involved in producing those goods.

Companies will face penalties of up to 50 euros per tonne of CO2 if they don’t report. From 2026, there will be a CO2 fee applied to goods brought into the EU.”

I quote this part of the article to summarize the fact that in Europe there will be increasingly stringent limits on industrial emissions.
The same applies to other continents as well.

Problem of production costs and emissions:

Countries that purchase gas are subject to the vulnerability of the gas price (see how it went in 2021/2022), in addition to the fact that emissions of CO2 and other gases are increasingly higher.
